Safety Town

This year M and his buddy L got to do something very special early this summer.  They got to attend two weeks of a super fun class/camp called Safety Town.  It met for 10 mornings at one of the local elementary schools.  Children are only eligible for this program the year before entering Kindergarten.  We were so excited to learn we got in.

Each day the kids learn about a new kind of safety.  They learned about fire, gun, stranger, street, chemicals, bike, bus, pool, water, poison, cars etc etc. The kids learn catchy songs about each one. They have guest speakers and watch short video clips. They get to check out emergency vehicles. They toured the pool.  They rode on a bus.  They had great fun.

A very special aspect to Safety Town is getting to ride in little pedal cars through a pretend city.  I don't have any pictures of this, but it is super cool.  The school black top area has lines painted on it for streets and there are signs etc.  They also have fake building that look like our local home town businesses that the kids drive around!

The second to the last day of Safety Town the kids have an exam.  I thought it was just on their address and phone number, but it was actually on many things they learned throughout the week.  M didn't study for it, but got 100%!  This means that in theory,  he knows the safe choice... right? ;)

The final day of Safety Town is a program for parents and then a little graduation and party.  Charissa and I went to it watch which is how we got the pictures.  I am sure some of the other parents were able to go back and get pictures of the kids by the buildings and in the cars, but we were on a time crunch.

You see, Safety Town is always the two weeks between the start of summer vacation and summer school.  VBS is always the second week of summer vacation which is the week before summer school.  Because Safety Town is a one time thing, we decided to have the boys attempt to do both.

It was CRAZY in the mornings.  The boys had to be there at 8:00.  David, Charissa, Brandon and I all had roles in VBS starting around 8:00.  Brandon's role wasn't until 8:30 so he would bring the boys.  Charissa did registration so she would pick them up at 10:10 and they would get to do the second half of VBS each day.  The final day at Safety Town was very short and the kids were able to do the final full day of VBS.  It was nice that the boys were together so we could carpool and share the load.  I am so glad they did it, but I am thankful that no one in our families has ST next summer so we can focus on VBS.
