Reclaiming the Swing Set and Fishing (Summer Vacation Week 5 Part 3)

Saturday 7/11 -
Three weekends ago we decided to reclaim one of our swing sets.  Before the church renovation we had a climber and a swing set in our yard.  They were moved out to make room for the equipment and the addition.  They needed to be moved home and be set back up.  We opted to just bring home the swing set as the climber wasn't really used enough to be worth the space it would take up.

While over at the church parking lot scouting things out, we were able to talk with our neighbor for quite a while.  It was special to be able to connect and catch up.

Setting up the structure wasn't the easiest thing in the world, but we managed.  Brandon is an expert at figuring things out and getting things done well.  As we set it up it became quite obvious that it needed a good paint job.

Check out that strength!

Brandon making it all fit back together.

Brandon took the kids finishing under the bridge in the afternoon.  I did something glamorous like prep food, email or blog.

Good teamwork

T: This one is really big!

M: A catfish is NOT as cute as a cat!  It looks like it has lipstick.

One Fish Two Fish!

Sunday 7/12 -

We had online and outdoor church in the morning.  In the afternoon we decided to tackle the big paint job.  The crazy thing about painting a swing set is the realization of how many surfaces it has.  It took us quite a while.  The kids helped us which was good for family memories, but caused us to do lots of "run catching" and use a lot more paint.

First we had to use some scrappers and wire brushes to prep for the painting.  As you can see from the picture below, T has some special paint scraping techniques.

T: Hanging on the monkey bar and scraping works great!

When it came time to paint T picked the fattest brush (as I would have guessed) and plunged it all the way into the paint can.  In that moment it was quite obvious that painting with kids would be very different than painting without them.

Working hard!

The happy crew

In order to make the swing set level Brandon had to really dig down one side of the set.

Paint complete, digging in process.

By evening it was time to swing!

M and T:  We LOVE having a swing set again!

Since these pictures were taken we had to bury the right side of the set for stability which meant we had to bury the left side even deeper.  We also added rings in the middle for flips and tricks.

The swings are so regulating for both kids and a huge blessing to have in our yard again!
