Last Tuesday (May 26th) Brandon had his second surgery to repair his retina detachment. As I mentioned in a previous post, the oil they put in his eye after the first surgery had begun to leak and the second surgery needed to happen sooner rather than later. I am happy to report that Brandon's surgery and initial recovery went very well. They replaced the oil with a gas bubble and he had to be face down Tues-Thurs so really only 2.5 days which was much better than last time.
I think everything went more smoothly because Brandon knew what to expect and the initial recovery was shorter.
We are now one week and three days into recovery and the gas bubble is getting smaller. The vision coming back is quite blurry, so we are very curious to see what the Dr. will say at the follow up next Wednesday. We are praying that he will regain all of the eyesight he had prior to the tears and detachment.
This surgery was different than the previous surgery, because the kids were not at school. We spent a lot of time figuring out how to make the day work with kids at home. Ultimately, the kids and I ended up dropping Brandon off for pre-op early in the morning (8:30) and then coming home and doing school and our normal day and then heading back to pick him up after the nurse called post op. The hospital was only 40 minutes away. We rewarded the kids with a movie during the second trip down. They were able to continue the movie as we waited for Brandon. We were not prepared for the intense heat we experienced while waiting for him. I had to keep the van on to run the air which is rare for our area!
