Urgent Care and stitches for M (Week 9)

As I mentioned in the last post, the bike riding was going well and all were having fun.  Apparently there were several logs together that bikers were supposed to drive over.  M wanted to jump them, but didn't jump them and ended up crashing into a tree.  Thankfully he had a pretty flat nose, or there would have been a lot more blood.  He ended up getting lots of scrapes, but one main injury.  He bit his lip very hard and there was a think flap of skin that was hanging inside his mouth.

M: I was thinking that I never want to bike again.

I was at home and had just finished washing dishes and called my mom to give her a Buttercup update (much more to come in a future post about our crazy drooling cat).  Almost immediately after hanging up with her, the phone rang and it was Brandon.  He told me that M fell and I should come and bring a towel.

I pulled up to the meeting spot just as the crew was coming into view.  Brandon came over to me and told me he might need stitches.  We decided to load both bikes up in the van so that Brandon could bike home quickly.  He ended up arriving at home the same time we did.

M: This was not fun.

Once we got home Brandon cleaned out the wound and got a better look at the injury.  He called a Telehealth number and they informed him that someone would call him back.  M was talking to Brandon's parents on my phone to try to calm down.  I was trying to keep T and her commentary away from M, so we sat in my room and talked.  Meanwhile, the nurse determined that M would need to go in for stitches.  She also said that we could make it to urgent care before it closes and avoid going to the ER.  We hopped in the van pretty quickly and headed to urgent care.  M was super chatty on the way to the Dr's office. He knew he was being chatty and apologized.  Amazingly, he was SO regulated during the whole process.  The intensity of the situation allowed him to function in a very responsible way.

When we arrived at the clinic a woman in full plastic gown and shield etc was sitting at the door.  She asked us many questions and took both of our temps.  We then followed yellow X's to the next spot and went through another round of symptom questions.  After that we were immediately escorted to a room.  We were the ONLY non clinic staff there the entire time we were there.  We felt very safe and well cared for.  Once in the room there was another round of COVID questions, so three rounds total during our visit.
I snuck this pic of him while we were waiting for the Dr.
M was so chatty during the procedure and really wanted to watch everything.  I was thankful that the PA stood in front of me so I didn't have to see much at all. After the stitches the nurse took him to a bathroom to look in a mirror.  The PA told me that she has never seen a more mature 10 year old who asked such thoughtful questions and remained so calm.  I felt like I had never seen this young man either.  It was actually one of the best hours I have had with M in years!

M: I asked them for a mirror so I could watch the stitches.
A patched flap.

In the end he needed 3 stitches and an updated T-dap shot as well... or was it the D-tap shot?  Basically,  he hit a tree and we wanted to make sure he had a tetanus shot up to date.  Because it was a bite wound he also had to take antibiotics.  We made a late night Walgreens drive through run to pick it up.

It was an emotional evening, but it could have been much much worse and we were very thankful for the care we received.
